Product Details

The leaves of Fagus sylvatica are yellow to green in spring and a rich russet brown in autumn. The small green spring flowers are wind pollinated and produce a 3 sided beech "mast" nut within a spiky outer casing.

It does well in most reasonably fertile, well drained soils, except heavy clay or light sand. Fagus sylvatica tends to favour more temperate climates and is difficult to establish when faced with extreme heat and drought. With this in mind avoid planting in paved or tarmac areas where reflected heat and light makes Beech suffer.

Fagus sylvatica is a very good candidate for screening at lower levels, it can be trained into a hedge or indeed a pleached panel and this is how these specimens are supplied.  These Full Pleached, Medium sized, specimens have been trained onto frames that are 1.2m wide x 2m tall and have a small clear stem at the bottom of around 60-80cm.   When the leader if removed from Beech like this they tend to hang onto their brown leaves through the winter more, making them useful for screening.

Mature height: 20m+
