Product Details

Cotoneaster cornubia is a highly acclaimed, small, versatile tree which is useful for screening.

This pretty small tree can also be found in many gardens growing as a shrub, however we grow this tree as a proper tree with a 1.8m clear stem and rounded crown. The leaves are small and light green, with a slightly silvery underside. In the autumn time it becomes festooned with a large abundance of bright red berries.

Cotoneaster cornubia is particularly useful for stilted hedging and screening, as it is considered to be semi-evergreen, although not quite to the extent of our favourite for stilted screening Ligustrum japonicum. It tends to lose leaves, becoming thinner in the crown as the wnter develops.

This versatile tree was raised in the famous Exbury Gardens in the early 1930's and won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002 and 1933, as well as the First Class Certificate in 1936. It is sometimes categorized under Cotoneaster x watereri and elsewhere said to be a cultivar of C. frigidus, we list it as Cornubia.

Cotoneaster cornubia is a tough tree and will tolerate most soil conditions. It is a welcome addition to any planting scheme which aims to achieve some autumn and winter interest with higher level screening.
