Amelanchier Ballerina is a small tree that is naturalised over much of Western Europe and has the significant benefit of providing some interest at all points of the year. The profuse white flowers emerge in the spring, followed by foliage which is a coppery colour that turns to bright green by late spring.
The autumn colour is brilliant red, emerging in conjunction with rounded fruits which are initially red in summer before turning black in the autumn. Although not the sweetest of tasting fruits, they are edible, adding to the attraction of this little tree as a superb addition to any garden planting scheme.
Amelanchier ballerina is a versatile, small growing tree, which performs best in moist, well drained, lime free soil. It is capable of thriving in most soil types; however in soil of reduced quality it is wise to invest time and effort into the tree pit preparation to give the tree the best chance at thriving in less than optimum conditions. Although we do grow the ballerina as a standard tree, if left to manage on its own it will revert to being more of a shrub than a tree.If you would like a true standard Amelanchier, Robin Hill is the one to go for, as this tree naturally wants to form a “proper tree”.
Amelanchier ballerina is a small tree that is perfect for garden schemes and the fact that it offers so much interest should make it unquestionably a first choice for any project requiring more than a flutter of flower in the spring.
If you live in an area prone to rabbits or deer then we recommend rabbit guards for these trees.
