Please note: Small sized Abies procera are 1.25-1.5m tall in 45l containers.
Abies procera, also known as the Noble Fir, is a coniferous evergreen that is native to North America, from the North West of California to West Oregon and Washington, and is typically at its best in high altitudes.
This attractive Fir tree is traditionally marketed as a Christmas tree, hence the association in the common name, with it making up to around 25% of those live trees on sale.
Abies procera exhibits foliage that is classic to Firs, with small needles that are blue-green in colour and cones that stand very upright from the tree, making them very visible and adding to the character of this pretty evergreen.
As with many evergreen specimens, the Noble Fir does not enjoy its roots sitting in water, preferring a well-drained soil that is moist and whilst it can cope with mountainous ranges, it is best suited to a sheltered aspect where it can monopolise on the direct sunlight.
Abies procera is grown at Barcham branching all the way to the base, making the most of the foliage and evergreen component of the tree. As the tree matures, it retains the beautifully pyramidal shape (Christmas tree like!) that is also displayed as a juvenile tree with no need for maintenance to achieve this.
Whilst one may be tempted to plant such a tree as a screening tree in a garden, the Noble Fir really is a more appropriate choice where space will allow it to reach its full potential. It is a great arboretum selection or addition to a parkland or estate.
