Thought to have been cultivated for its fruit in China some 4000 years ago and still popular today.
Originating from China, where it is grown as a commercial fruiting crop, it makes a small dome shaped tree.
Russet brown dates of about 2-3 centimetres are profusely borne by late summer, but the tree can sucker, so it is unsuitable for paved / hard areas.
Being a desert species it is very tolerant of drought and its thorny stems add to a pleasing architectural effect.
A collector’s item!!
Mature height: 5m
