Ulmus Americana Princeton Foliage

Common Name:Princeton Elm
Species:Ulmus Americana Princeton Riveredge

An exiting addition to our range, with proven resistance to Dutch Elm disease.

In two individual studies of the disease, spanning seven years, each conducted by research geneticists at the USDA National Arboretum, the Riveredge Princeton Elm scored at the top for tolerance and recovery to the massive doses of the most virulent strain.

Recently planted as an avenue, lining the road outside the White House in America, we now pin our colours on this clone above others.

We secured the UK rights to this cultivar when we partnered with Riveredge Farms in the States. This is the only Elm with a proven track record and there are thriving avenues in America that are over 80 years old. Its parents derive from trees dated at over 287 years old.

It is a quick growing, broad leaved tree, rounded when young but developing a spreading open canopy at maturity. It will take a few years for us to bulk up numbers on this tree, but they are available on a limited basis.

The first avenue planted in the UK was at Highgrove for Prince Charles. Much independent research has been undertaken on this clone in America and it is rated to have the best resistance by far. It is tolerant of most soils and also thrives on coastal sites.

Mature height: 20m+
