The False Acacia was introduced to France from America in 1601, and is now naturalised through much of Europe.

It produces large epicormic thorns and can be prone to suckering so it can be used as a stout defence against unwelcome visitors.

A large irregular crowned tree with soft, green, pinnate leaves that emerge early May.

Racemes of sweetly scented white flowers in June are replaced by purple tinged seed pods in autumn.

It thrives on any soil, and tolerates urban pollution, but is not good in windy, exposed locations due to its rather brittle branches.

Mature height: 20m+
