Pyrus Calleryana (Ornamental Pear) 'Chanticleer'

Species:Pyrus Calleryana Chanticleer
Common Name(s):Ornamental Pear
Tree Features:Autumn Colour,Low Fruit Fall,White Flower
Genus:Pyrus
Seasons of Interest:Spring Interest,Autumn Interest
Shape:Pyramidal
Mature Size:Medium (10-15m)
Tree Type:Deciduous Broad Leaf
Tolerances:Pollution resistant
Tree uses:Urban Sites,Garden,Avenue Trees,Parkland Trees,Screening Trees

This Ornamental Pear was selected in the USA and named after the cockerel in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.

Bred by Edward Scanlon and patented in the States in 1965, it is often referred to as the ‘Bradford Pear’ which is in fact slightly broader and denser.

It won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002 and as its green lush foliage is so early to appear in spring and so late to fall in autumn it has excellent screening uses.

It is one of the very best Ornamental Pears with much to recommend it.

Pyrus calleryana Chanticleer is of medium height, generally rather columnar, becoming more oval when mature.

Abundant blossom is produced as early as March, followed by glossy foliage which is late to fall in autumn, when it turns orange and red.

It has rapidly established itself as a fine street tree, and is tolerant of air pollution and even salty, coastal winds.

An excellent choice for the urban or rural environments

Mature height: 10-15m
