The Lombardy Poplar is a male clone, propagated from cuttings taken in Lombardy in the 1700s.

It is a particularly tough tree even coping with coastal exposure.
Introduced to the UK in 1758 it won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002.
These are the trees that line mile after mile (or should that be kilometre after kilometre?) of French roads.
Very tall, tightly columnar and of uniform habit, they make a fine windbreak or screen, and are also good for specimen planting in parks.
One of the very best for verges and avenues.
