Raised in 1875, this is thought by many to be the best fruiting crab.
It won the updated Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 2002.
A small tree with an irregular, oval crown, it makes a splendid tree for gardens with limited space.
The white flowers are followed by relatively large, conical orange-red fruits, which have a good flavour if required for preserves or jelly.
Like all crab apples, it thrives on most soils.
Mature height: 5-7m
