The Manna Ash or Flowering Ash has been grown in Britain since before 1700. A sweet sap, known as manna, is extracted from the stems to make a laxative!

A sweet sap, known as manna, is extracted from the stems to make a laxative.

A native of Southern Europe and South West Asia, it won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002.

Rather slow growing for an Ash, this eventually makes a rounded tree of medium height, producing plenty of creamy white, fragrant blossoms in late spring.

It also provides excellent autumn colour when the foliage turns from yellow to red and orange.

It does best on drier, calcareous and sandy, loamy soils and is particularly well suited to urban planting.
