The Fastigiate Beech - a rather ugly name for a rather beautiful tree!
This medium to large tree has a columnar habit and is a very good choice for both wide verges and specimen plantings in parks.
Even when mature, it is seldom more than 3m wide. It originates from Dawyck in Scotland and was in cultivation prior to 1850.
Beech thrives just about anywhere other than exposed coastal locations. As it is shallow rooted, underplanting is not recommended.
It does well in most reasonably fertile, well drained soils, except heavy clay or light sand.
Mature height: 15-20m
