A slow growing cultivar, even by beech standards.
Perhaps best described as a purple leaved form of Fagus sylvatica 'Aspleniifolia', this slow growing, large, pyramidal tree is perfect for parks and large open spaces.
It has been in cultivation since the 1890s. Beech thrives just about anywhere other than exposed coastal locations. As it is shallow rooted, underplanting is not recommended.
It does well in most reasonably fertile, well drained soils, except heavy clay or light sand.
Mature height: 20m+
