Crataegus X Lavalleei (Hybrid Cockspur Thorn)

A small hawthorn tree which produces a dense crown of thorn clad branches that give rise to its trademark rounded habit at maturity.

Originating back to the 1870s this fine tree won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002 and 1924.

The large white flowers are followed by orange haws, which are retained for most of the winter.

The oval, glossy, leathery leaves persist until December, colouring from red through to yellow.

As it is only slightly thorny, it makes a better street tree than most other hawthorns.

A good choice for urban and coastal planting, it is tolerant of air pollution.

It does well in most soils, including very dry and wet soils.
