The wood of the Nettle Tree was once used to produce charcoal.
A native of Southern Europe and North Africa, it has been grown in the UK since the 16th century and is used commonly as a verge or street tree in the Mediterranean as it is tolerant of both reflected heat and salt laden air.
Related to the elms, this small to medium tree has broad, lanceolate, rough leaves. It has a broad crown and smooth trunk.
It is widely planted for roadside shade in southern Europe, and the bark has been used to produce a yellow dye.
Good for avenue and park plantings, where it will withstand much pollution, and is also very good close to coasts.
It thrives on most soils, including very dry ones.
Mature height: 10-15m
