The Silver Birch is also known as the 'Lady of the Woods' - so called because of its slender and graceful appearance.

The Silver Birch is also known as the “Lady of the Woods” – so called because of its slender and graceful appearance.

It is a pioneer species and particularly admired in the UK. Even though it seemingly grows anywhere it is remarkably difficult to successfully transplant bare rooted, however our containerised trees counter this trend.

A group of three silver birches that we supplied were planted in Stamford, Lincolnshire in 2005 and have grown from 12-14cm girth to 20-25cm girth in three years!

A medium tree with a conical, but semi weeping habit, the bark is white with horizontal lines and large, diamond shaped cracks as the tree matures.

Very good for parks and woodland, but not suitable for areas where soil becomes compacted.

It grows well on most soils and we grow it as both a single stemmed tree and a multi stemmed tree.

Multi stemmed trees are particularly useful when planted on elevated or exposed ground as they have a low centre of gravity and need no staking.

Our multi stemmed birch is grown as true single plant coppices, not three or four plants bundled together in a pot that can lead to issues further down the line.

Mature height: 15-20m
