Originally found along the river banks of the south eastern United States, this small to medium tree makes a great show with its shaggy, flaking, cinnamon/orange bark.

The trunk often splits low down into two or three stems. Mature trees are truly statuesque and broadly pyramidal in form. Foliage is soft green and diamond shaped. A lovely park tree and good for wide verges.

It does best in moist soil

The common name of River Birch can be misleading, as we have seen this tree thriving in arid London tree pits once established.  It can tolerate extreme heat in the summer, thriving in Florida as well as Kentucky in the States, so this could become a good choice for the South East of the UK as the temperatures continue to break records during the summer months.
