Acer saccharinum 'Laciniata Wierii'
Discovered in 1873 by DB Wier, this large spreading tree has pendulous lower branches and deeply divided sharply toothed leaves. .
Its large, wide limbs make it a splendid subject for parks and other open spaces.
Like its parent plant it thrives on most soils and extreme conditions and grows with great vigour.
Given enough space it can be truly dramatic but if planted for the moment rather than for the next generation you can pass on a legacy of high maintenance.
Best to avoid excessively windy sites.
Mature height: 20m+
