Discovered by Newton Armstrong in Windsor, and later named afer him.
Originally introduced in the late 1940s, this medium tree has a tightly columnar habit, making it very useful as a street and car park tree. Like the species, it has superb autumn colour. The growth of the roots is restricted to the width of the crown and does not lift up the pavement.
It tolerates air pollution and wet soil. Best on acid soils.
Mature height: 10-15m
