Introduced in the early 1870s, this ‘lollypop’ tree is top grafted onto platanoides stem to form a dense mop headed tree.
A very good choice as a street tree and for urban plantings and particularly popular in Germany.
It does well on most soil types, tolerates air pollution and resist drought.
The dense rounded formality of the crown makes this a delight for architects seeking contrast. Wonderful when in full foliage, it can be rather a let down in a garden after leaf fall as the crown network is small and stubby.
Best for urban environments where small is beautiful.
Mature height: 5-10m
