Native to North America where it can grow up to 75 metres in height; this fast growing conifer was introduced by David Douglas in 1830.
It grows best on well drained soils, is lime tolerant, and thrives in areas with high annual rainfall.
The fragrant leaves, which can be 3-6cm long, are characterised by two grey - blue bands underneath. Cones are produced up to 10cm in length and are vivid green when young. The tallest specimen recorded was in Washington State and measured 81.4m in 1996.
