Specimens with red and purple foliage are an extremely popular choice and tend to be used in contrast with green leaved trees in order to provide a focal point or to break up the colour of the landscape.

Barcham recommends the following red/purple leaved species:

• Acer platanoides Royal Red

• Acer pseudoplatanus Spaethii

• Fagus sylvatica Purpurea

• Prunus cerasifera Nigra

• Prunus Royal Burgundy
