Native Trees

Trees that are native to the British Isles can be defined as those that colonised following the last ice age.

These species have therefore been present in the UK for a very long period and as such are an integral component of the landscape. If a scheme desires to compliment the existing landscape and environment, especially in rural areas, using native species is recommended as they will blend in with existing hedgerows and mature specimens. Native species also support and encourage indigenous flora and fauna, they are therefore important for schemes with a remit to enhance the surrounding environment.

At Barcham we produce the following native species:

  • Acer campestre
  • Alnus glutinosa
  • Betula pendula
  • Betula pubescens
  • Carpinus betulus
  • Corylus avellana
  • Crataegus monogyna
  • Fagus sylvatica
  • Fraxinus excelsior
  • Ilex aquifolium
  • Pinus sylvestris
  • Populus nigra
  • Populus tremula
  • Prunus avium
  • Prunus padus
  • Quercus patraea
  • Quercus robur
  • Salix alba
  • Salix caprea
  • Salix pentandra
  • Sorbus aria (Lutescens)
  • Sorbus aucuparia
  • Sorbus torminalis
