Tree of the Moment - Winter
From the snowy peaks of the Himalayas, this white beauty is a sight to behold....At any one time of year, there are always tree species that catches your eye. Be it for stunning autumn foliage or delicate flowers. For the Winter months, our Tree of the Moment is Betula utilis Jacquemontii.
The period between Christmas and early March can be pretty bleak but there is one tree to liven up even the gloomiest of days! Betula utilis Jacquemontii can be used either as a standard specimen or as a multi stemmed bush and its pure white trunk and branches offer superb contrast against darker backgrounds.
Our advice is to stay away from stock propagated by tissue culture as the growth can be floppy and the end shape disappointing so it is always better to buy trees that were originally grafted or budded. Also beware a multi stem that is supplied as three individual plants grown close together rather than one plant coppiced to provide numerous breaks low down. When bought as ’three in a pot’, one plant generally dominates over time to the detriment of the others.
Equally great in both hard and soft areas, the Himalayan Birch is a stunning winter performer.
