1. Amelanchier arborea Robin Hill (Serviceberry, Juneberry, Snowy mespilus)
This lovely small growing tree has profuse and glorious white spring flower followed by stunning red and orange coloured foliage in autumn time. It is the perfect tree where space is limited and will tolerate some pruning, so can be managed to suit your requirements. It certainly is a superb performer and gives outstanding results year after year.
2. Betula utilis Jacquemontii (Himalayan Birch)
This stunning Birch is of a Medium size and has stark white peeling bark and a delicate open, yet flame shaped habit. This tree is extremely delicate and stands gloriously proud throughout the winter months when the rest of the garden is hiding in dull gloom. This tree famously inhabits the winter garden at Anglesey Abbey, where a whole forest of Betula utilis Jacquemontii stand eerily in the half light of winter. A stunning addition to any garden.
3. Pyrus calleryana Chanticleer (Ornamental Pear)
This tree is the perfect tree for screening in a Medium sized garden. Although it is a deciduous tree and therefore loses its leaves in the autumn time, it is the first tree into leaf in the Spring and often holds onto its leaves into December. This quality makes it a great choice for blocking out any unsightly views at the most important time of year, i.e. when you are out and enjoying your garden and is much more cost effective than evergreens of an equivalent size. A truly wise choice for anyone who wishes to add some interest to their garden, as well as block out any unsightly views.
4. Ligustrum japonicum (Tree Privet)
This tree is found as a hedging plant in many gardens throughout the UK, and often it is this image that is conjured when this tree is suggested. At Barcham, we do not supply feathered hedging trees, we have trees with clear trunks and a rounded crown on top. They can be planted in a row, close to one another, and maintained as a hedge and therefore be used as a superb screening plant. It is considered to be semi-evergreen, and really this means that they will retain their leaves all year round in the South of the UK, but may lose them for periods in the North. It is a fairly plain tree, but is a very cost effective method of screening as these are not as expensive as true evergreens.
5. Prunus serrula Tibetica (Tibetan Cherry)
This small growing tree has truly spectacular bark. The bark is a dark mahogany colour and over time becomes peeling making this feature very distinguishing. In the Spring it has a covering of white flower, although it is not really known for being a profuse flowering tree. It is a perfect tree for a small gardens where space is premium and ornamental quality is required.
