Widely distributed through most of Europe, southern Scandinavia and western Asia, the Field Maple with its burrs (or knots) produces "birds eye" maple, which was widely used in making furniture and veneers until the early Victorian era.

Also known as the Caucasian Maple, this cultivar dates back to at least 1838 but remains rather uncommon. 

Its common name of Amur maple derives from the Amur River, which divides China and Russia.
