A most beautiful and widely spreading, rounded small tree, it has heavily corrugated foliage, which is darker than the European Hornbeam, and attractive fruiting catkins which resemble hops.

An excellent park tree, it has smooth, pink/grey bark.

It grows well on most soils, including clay and chalk.
