The Holm Oak is a native of Mediterranean countries, but it has been grown in Britain since the 1500s.
The timber is hard and long-lasting, used for joinery, vine-props and for charcoal.
One of the most beautiful evergreen trees, this is large and has a densely rounded habit. It is perhaps surprisingly versatile, being suitable for coastal plantings, topiary and as 'stilt' hedging or pleaching.
It also tolerates shade and air pollution.
Suitable for parks and gardens.
Mature height: 20m+
