The Purple Beech is one of our most beautiful trees.
This large, rather conical tree with its dark purple leaves is sometimes wrongly referred to as 'Copper Beech', which is seed-grown and variable in leaf colour.
This cultivar has a much deeper purple leaf, and is a tree of great beauty and majesty.
It makes a superlative subject planted as a specimen in parks and large estates. Beech thrives just about anywhere other than exposed coastal locations. As it is shallow rooted, underplanting is not recommended.
It does well in most reasonably fertile, well drained soils, except heavy clay or light sand.
Mature height: 20m+
