The strawberry tree is so-named because of the strawberry-like fruits it produces in autumn.
This native of south west Ireland and the Mediterranean is, unusually for an ericaceous plant, tolerant of lime. It is a small evergreen with brown, shedding bark, and its flowers and fruits are produced together in the autumn. A good choice for exposed and coastal sites, it is also good for urban plantings.
It does well in most soil types, but it prefers moist soil.
