Double Stakes and Ties

Using Double Stakes and Ties is a very simple and effective method of staking trees following planting. Read on for a synopsis of this method of securing trees....

Using Double Stakes and Ties is a very simple and effective method of staking trees following planting. This involves placing a stake either side of the rootball of the tree and using rubber ties and spacers to secure the stem of the tree to each stake. Traditionally a single stake may have been used, but this is not advisable when planting large container grown trees, as driving a stake through the rootball will damage the root system of the tree.A correctly staked and tied tree using double stakes and ties

It is recommended that the stakes are run in line with the prevailing wind direction, thus the tree stem will be blown onto, rather than across the ties. In very exposed sites, double staking can be upgraded to triple staking and thus the stakes are then applied in a triangle arrangement around the rootball of the tree. This increases the support afforded to the tree from the stakes.

The fact that this system is simple to administer is a big benefit, but it is also considered a very effective method due to the fact that the rubber ties afford some “play” to the stem of the tree, therefore the tie is less likely to brace against the stem in adverse weather conditions, causing it to break. This movement in the stem also encourages the tree to facilitate the growth of stabilising anchor roots, in order to help the tree to stabilise itself in time. The tie can also be adjusted over time and thus as the stem of the tree increases in thickness as the tree grows.

The only negative point is the fact that in some exposed sites this system may not be robust enough to protect the tree and therefore in this situation using stakes and cross boards may be more suitable.

Stakes and ties should remain in situ to support the tree for at least 2 growing seasons.
