Busy at shows and seminars

Barcham has just come out of a very busy period with Grand Designs, the Chelsea Flower Show and our Gary Watson Seminar here at Barcham now behind us. The latter event attracted over 350 dedicated arborists to the nursery to catch up on the latest research from the UK and the States, concentrating on root physiology and how roots dictate the fortunes of urban trees. A big thank you to Gary Watson, Glynn Percival and Andy Hirons for their research and delivering this information. Thanks also to Mark Johnson for chairing the day.

A cold and dry start to the growing season has been replaced by a damp and overcast spell of weather and I feel as soon as the next high pressure lingers over the UK, tree growth will be explosive! We are already seeing second flushes emerge across the genera at Barcham but Acer campestre clones are particularly liking the conditions.

I slaughtered my Olive at home to it's main framework about 6 weeks ago, removing all the foliage, and it is now budding up over the full extent of the remaining branch structure. Olive is an incredibly tolerant plant to take this abuse and I routinely butcher it every five years or so in late March / early April  to keep it in order.

The nusery is looking great so any of you wanting to view trees for later on in the year are most welcome to book an appointment to come up and see us.

All the best

Mike
