Barcham Trees Award

Barcham Trees Award for Outstanding Urban Forest Management 2011

Much of the excellent work in managing urban forests in the UK is largely unrecognised.

Given the Coalition Government’s commitment to urban tree planting as promoted in their £4.2million, Big Tree Plant, campaign Barcham Trees are pleased to launch this year’s Barcham Trees Award for Outstanding Urban Forest Management.

The winning authority will be presented with £5000.00 worth of 12-14 cm girth containerised trees suitable for immediate urban planting. The award will be presented at the Arboricultural Association Conference in Warwick in September 2011. The specially commissioned trophy, currently held by Bristol City Council will be presented at the conference, and held by the winning authority for one year.

Entrants will be evaluated according to the criteria in the attached document (see below).

Evaluation will be carried out by an Independent Judging Panel comprising:

Dr Mark Johnston MBE: Research Fellow in Arboriculture and Urban Forestry at Myerscough College, Chartered Arboriculturist and co-author of Trees in Towns II.

Jeremy Barrell: A consultant, Chartered Arboriculturist and internationally recognised speaker who is a leading advocate of developing urban tree management as a means of adapting our urban spaces to meet the challenges of climate change.

Martin Kelly: Managing Director of Capita-Lovejoy and Chair of Trees and Design Action Group.

Les Round: A consultant with some forty years experience in all aspects of arboriculture and urban forestry, including working as a local authority tree officer.

The closing date for submissions, which must be presented electronically, will be 31st July 2011.

Representatives of the first three authorities will be invited to the Arboricultural Association Conference as guests of Barcham Trees. The award winner will be announced the first week of September 2011, prior to the Arboricultural Association Conference.

Please contact Keith Sacre, Sales Director at Barcham Trees on 01353 720 748 or keith@barchamtrees.co.uk to register your intention to enter for the award.
