A quick guide to how to plant Barcham Trees using our Online Planting Kits.

The Online Planting Kits for Small, Medium and Large trees consist of the following:

  • 2 no 1.8m stakes (3 no 2m for Instant Kits)
  • 2 no straps of tie (3 no for Instant Kits)
  • 4 no spacers (6 no for Instant Kits)
  • 4 no nails (6 no for Instant Kits)
  • 1 bag Barcham Fertiliser (2 no for Instant Kits)
  • 1 bag of Bark Mulch

The following steps outline how to plant and stake Barcham Trees in a soft landscape.

  • Dig a hole at least 25% wider and deeper than the rootball of the container that is being planted.
  • You can dig a hole up to twice the size of the container, depending upon space.End of the stake with the tie nailed to it
  • Digging a larger hole breaks up compaction in the soil and thus enables the roots to move easily into the surrounding soil once they start growing.
  • Once the hole has been dug put some of the soil back into the hole so that the final depth of the planting pit is the same depth as the rootball of the container that is being planted.
  • Sprinkle 1/4 of the fertiliser bag into the bottom of the hole.One side of finished effect of stake, tie, spacers and nails
  • Mix the rest of the fertiliser with the remaining removed soil.
  • Take one stake and place it inside of the hole, drive in to a depth 30cm deeper than the hole.
  • Put the other one on the opposite site with a gap between them about 10cm wider than the width of the rootball.The full finished effect of applying tie, spacers and nails to stakes
  • The stakes should be run in line with the prevalent wind direction.
  • Remove the container from the rootball of the tree, place in the hole and fill in with the soil mixed with fertiliser.
  • Make sure the tree is straight.
  • Take one of the straps and nail onto the very top of the stake.The full finished effect of applying tie, spacers and nails to stakes
  • Take this and thread it through 2 spacers, round the tree and back through the 2 spacers, pull so it is at full stretch but not over tight.
  • Do this once again for the other side, starting by nailing the tie about 2.5cm lower.
  • Apply the bark mulch over the base of the tree to a depth of 5cm. This prevents weed growth and also helps by retaining water.
  • Finially finish by watering the tree using a watering can with a rose attachment. Initially 2 watering cans full will be enough for a 45/65L tree.

The result:  A correctly planted, staked and mulched tree.
