5 Indicators that a tree is suffering from stress due to waterlogging

Water logged conditions poses a great threat to trees, especially if the tree is subjected to water logging over a prolonged period of time. There are a number of trees that will tolerate this to a certain extent, but less that cope with it long term. Ultimately if you are aware that your site is prone to becoming wet, it is highly advisable to make suitable species selection prior to planting (see this section of the website).

Considered species selection is not always possible however, as water logging can be as a result of some of the adverse weather conditions that we have been suffering in the UK over the past few years which is attributed to global climate change.

There are 5 factors to indicate that your tree is suffering from water-logging :

1. The first symptoms appear on the leaves, presenting as decay, and or yellowing in between the veins of the leaves. The leaves may eventually shrivel up and go brown.

2. The tree may have an overall look of wilting. This can be misconceived as lack of water, so be ware.

3. If you push a fork into the area just outside where the root system is likely to be, there may be a foul smell, indicating that the roots are rotting. If examined, damaged roots may look black.

4. Fresh shoots may die back due to lack of water and bark will start to peel off of the main stem and smaller stems.

5. Overall the tree will become stunted if it does not fail due to the conditions. If caught early, there are methods of amelioration that can prevent the failure of your tree, however urgency is the key.

Avoid disappointment by following Barchams guide to tree species suited especially to wet soils, we can help you make the right selection that will give not only long term results, but instant impact. With Barcham Trees you can be sure that you will get immediate results following tree planting, as our unique container grown tree production method produces trees with a complete root system that will readily establish and continue to thrive from that point onwards and our selection of trees tolerant of water logged conditions will ensure that you make the right selection from the offset.

Continue your selection process now by having a look at the species in the right hand selection or visiting Barchams “Tree selection” tool...
